Running a tennis tournament
Shorter matches
A best-of-three-sets match usually takes an hour and a half to two hours. Amateur tournaments therefore often replace the third set with a match tie-break to 10 points, or play a single set in the group stage.
Matches per court
With matches of around 90 minutes, one court can host 5 to 6 matches a day. Eight players in two groups followed by a knockout draw means 16 matches, so you need at least 4 courts to finish in a day.
Tie-breaks and balls
At 6 games all, a tie-break to 7 points is played, won by two clear points. Decide in advance who supplies the balls and whether every match gets new ones, or at least the semi-finals and final.
