A company tournament for 6–8 teams: the plan for the day

A company tournament for 6 to 8 teams fits into one afternoon: six teams playing round robin on two pitches with 12-minute matches is 15 matches and 1 h 57 min; eight teams in two groups with play-offs make 16 matches in the same time. kdovede adds a tournament page in company colours, a screen at the venue, a printable schedule with a QR code and an invoice made out to the company.

The programme for 6 to 8 teams

Plan on 12-minute matches with 3 minutes to swap teams; for mixed teams and less practised players a shorter match is better. The time in the table is pure play from the first match to the last; add half an hour for the opening and warm-up and half an hour for the awards.

VariantMatchesPer teamDuration
6 teams round robin, 2 pitchesRecommended for 6 teams: nobody is knocked out1551 h 57 min
6 teams round robin, 1 pitchThe same matches, twice the time1553 h 42 min
8 teams round robin, 2 pitches7 matches per team, a long afternoon2873 h 27 min
8 teams in 2 groups of 4, semi-finals, third place and final, 2 pitchesRecommended for 8 teams: top 2 of each group go through1631 h 57 min

For 6 teams we recommend round robin: everyone plays 5 matches, nobody is knocked out and the table decides by itself. On one pitch it takes 3 h 42 min, which is why a second pitch is worth setting up. For 8 teams, two groups of four with play-offs are quicker than round robin (28 matches, 3 h 27 min) and give you semi-finals and a final that colleagues come to watch. Any other combination is a moment's work in the tournament calculator.

A sample programme for 8 teams in two groups: 13:00 opening and group draw, 13:30 first match, groups finished around 15:00, then the semi-finals, the third-place match and the final at about 15:30, awards at 16:00.

Company colours and the tournament page

Set the company colour on the organisation and the tournament page, the screen at the venue and the share images take it on. Give the teams logos or just colours; department versus department looks better when every team has its own mark.

The Info page carries what you would otherwise send by e-mail: a description with photos and video, a cover photo, contacts, parking with navigation, refreshments and changing rooms. During the event you send a message from the organiser, which appears on the page and in the app as a notification.

A screen at the venue

A TV by the pitch or a projector in the hall opens the tournament screen: dark mode in company colours, live matches with a big score, upcoming matches, standings and the bracket rotate by themselves. At the ceremony it shows each revealed award across the whole screen. It is a page in a browser, nothing to install.

A printed schedule and a QR code

The print version of the tournament has the schedule by time and pitch and the group standings; print it or save it as a PDF. Add the poster with a QR code to the tournament page: at the entrance, by the refreshments and in the invitation. Anyone who scans it has the current schedule and results on their phone with no app and no account.

Payment and invoice

The account, preparing the tournament and previewing the page are free. You pay once to publish a tournament, by card through Stripe; the amount is on the pricing page. At checkout you fill in the company name, address and VAT or company number, and Stripe issues an invoice for the payment with those details; it is available any time in the Stripe portal from the account settings.

A company with several events a year (a summer tournament, a Christmas tournament, a team-building day) pays once a year for a Club Season with unlimited tournaments. Payment by bank transfer against an invoice in advance is not available yet; a company card or an expense claim handles the card payment.

Checklist before the event

  • Teams and captains signed up two weeks ahead; keep the count between 6 and 8, which the programme can carry.
  • Pitches and the playing session entered to match the hall or ground booking; the schedule built and sent to captains as a link.
  • The screen: a TV or projector with a browser and a connection, tested the day before.
  • Scorers: one person with a phone per pitch, signed in to the organisation.
  • The ceremony: awards filled in beforehand (winner, best player, fair play), photos for the share images.
  • Paperwork: card payment and the invoice to the company before the event, not on the day.

Company FAQ

Do employees need the app?

No. The tournament page opens from a QR code in a browser. The iPhone and Android app is an extra: a followed team, notifications and the score on the iPhone lock screen.

Can we play several sports in one day?

Each tournament has one sport and its rules. For football and volleyball, set up two tournaments in the same organisation; each is published separately, or both under a Club Season.

How long does preparation take?

Teams, pitches and the playing session take ten minutes to enter and the schedule builds itself. The Info page can be filled in any time, even after publishing.

Will we get an invoice made out to the company?

Yes, for every payment. You fill in the company details, including the VAT or company number, when paying by card; the invoice follows the payment and stays available in the Stripe portal.

What if a team joins at the last minute?

Add it and have the schedule built again, as long as play has not started. There is nothing more to pay for publishing.
